There were 13 of us at the AGM this year, but there must have been something about our individual and collective energy which made it feel like twice that many.
We made the business of running the group as interesting as possible and elected to run a series of workshops this year. Suggestions included poetic forms, descriptions, critiquing and rapping.
It was also decided to invite Birmingham’s current poet laureate Jo Skelt to one of our meetings. It would be a welcome return for Jo as she is a previous member of WWB.
We don’t normally have time for sharing our work at the AGM, but we squeezed some time in to hear 7 pieces because our meeting last month was cancelled. I’m so pleased we did. We were treated to a lush meal. Contributions ranged from a short poem from Rashida on identity which left us gasping, to Jude’s long poem about the war.
Rashida has kindly agreed to run a workshop on descriptive poetry for us later in the year. ‘Coming to this group is like nourishment,’ she said.
I second that.
